Steven, who is supported by Community Living Wallaceburg, lights up with joy every time he has the chance to create a piece of art. Leaving no corner of a canvas untouched, he has been an artist ever since he was able to hold a brush.

Acknowledging this creative spark, Jenna, one of Steven’s support staff, contacted artist Troy Brooks, a contemporary Canadian painter whose exhibits have been displayed internationally. Having known Troy for a number of years, Jenna was hopeful he would be willing to host Steven at his studio. “It’s amazing the things people will do for someone if you just ask,” Jenna stated, sharing the excitement felt when she received Troy’s positive response.

Ensuring Steven’s favourite snacks were available and following a brief visit in the sitting area, Troy took Steven on a tour of his studio to show him some of the pieces he was working on. The best part was when Troy invited Steven over to an easel and table set up for painting. Watching Steven paint, he praised his colour choices and even helped him clean his brushes and palate. Jenna recounted, “Troy was beyond welcoming, it was honestly so kind.”

Thanks to Jenna making this connection, and the generosity of Troy, Steven turned his dream into a possibility through this unique and once in a lifetime opportunity of painting alongside a professional artist. The painting Steven made while at the studio hangs in his kitchen as a daily reminder of this memory.
