“Growing up, both of my parents worked with individuals with special needs. As a university student, I was involved as a peer buddy through the Best Buddies Western organization. I was matched up with a member from Community Living London and developed an amazing relationship over my three years in school, participating in activities like bowling and minigolf and attending small concerts with my buddy who played the harmonica in a Country band.

What started out as a way to volunteer my time while in school grew into a perfect match for me where I didn’t feel like I was volunteering-it was more like I was hanging out with a wonderful friend. I realized how important it is for a person with a disability to not only be included in their community, but to feel included and valued. Now as a professional, I am way more aware of issues surrounding individuals with special needs in our community.

I was thrilled to become a member of Community Living Wallaceburg’s board where I’ve developed relationships with individuals that I may not have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the needs of individuals I treat at my practice. I also have a cousin with Down Syndrome, so advocating for people with disabilities holds an even deeper and personal meaning for me. I want to make sure the world he grows up in is inclusive and offers him every opportunity to fulfill his dreams. “
